Eid al-Adha 2026 falls on a Wednesday. May 27, to be exact, per the Hijri calendar confirmed by the Moroccan Council of Ulema for the 10th of Dhul Hijja 1447. Moroccan families abroad come home. Flights from Paris, Brussels, Madrid, London and Dubai fill up fifteen days in advance. Marrakech sees one of the heaviest arrival waves of the year.
You want to spend these three days with family. No accommodation stress. No chasing a taxi at 6am. No missing the moment of the sacrifice. Here is how.
Why Marrakech during Eid, and not Casablanca or Rabat
Marrakech changes its face during Eid. The medina slows down. The souks partially close for two days. And that is exactly what makes the city beautiful at this moment.
The riads empty of spring tourists. The palmeraie goes silent. The smell of grilled lamb rises from rooftops by 11am. Children step out in new clothes after morning prayer. May light, still soft, not yet crushing.
Casablanca at Eid is a family stop. Rabat is administration. Marrakech is the celebration. The real one. The one where your cousins, parents, in-laws gather around a long table on a palmeraie villa terrace, sipping mint tea while the lamb finishes grilling downstairs.
Key dates for Eid al-Adha 2026
Put these in your calendar. They shape the entire trip.
- Tuesday May 26, 2026: Eid eve, recommended arrival day. Souks handle the last purchases, livestock markets peak.
- Wednesday May 27, 2026: day one of Eid. Dawn prayer, sacrifice mid-morning, first family meal at noon, nap, visits to relatives in the afternoon.
- Thursday May 28, 2026: day two. Traditional dishes arrive on the table (boulfaf, offal tagine, mrouzia). Many families do the rounds of friends.
- Friday May 29, 2026: day three. Calmer. Good day for trips out to Agafay or Ourika valley.
RAK airport hits its arrival peak between May 23 and 26. If you land the evening of the 26th, pre-book a transfer. Taxi queues at that point become difficult.
Where to stay during Eid
Three options. Each fits a different kind of trip.
Private villa in the palmeraie
This is what we recommend for groups of 6 to 20. You get your pool, your kitchen, separate rooms for the generations, and importantly, space for the sacrifice and the grill. Many palmeraie villa owners are happy to make a BBQ area or open kitchen available for cooking the lamb on the terrace.
Think villas of 4 to 8 bedrooms, enclosed garden, private pool, sometimes a hammam. The best ones go four months ahead. For Eid 2026, availability remains, but it thins out fast in mid-May.
Luxury riad in the medina
The riad is the soul of old Morocco. Central patio, fountain, zellige, tadelakt, panoramic rooftop over the medina. For a couple or a small MRE family who wants to be inside the atmosphere, it's perfect.
Watch the morning noise. Eid prayer starts around 6:30am. Streets get busy by 7. If you want to sleep, pick a riad with bedrooms set back from the patio.
5-star hotel in Hivernage
Hivernage is the calm modern district. Mamounia, Royal Mansour, Four Seasons. Full hotel service, spa, restaurants, airport shuttle. The upside: you handle nothing. The downside: you live Eid from a distance, inside a bubble. Good fit for those mainly coming to rest.
We match your accommodation type to your family in under 15 minutes on WhatsApp. Send the number of people, the dates, the preferred district.
Getting around during Eid
This is the point MRE families underestimate every year. Taxis are scarce on the morning of May 27. Drivers are with their families. Uber and Careem run at a crawl. Walk-up car rentals at the airport are nearly impossible the evening before Eid if you haven't booked.
Three solutions.
KingKech private driver for the three days. High-end car (Mercedes E-Class, Range Rover, BMW 7 Series), dedicated driver, at your disposal from 8am to 10pm. This is the closest thing to European comfort. You get in, you get out, you think about nothing.
Rental car delivered to the villa. A Porsche Macan T, a Range Rover Sport, a Touareg, a Q3, delivered to your door the night before. You drive yourself. Ideal if you're planning Atlas or Essaouira day trips.
Airport transfer plus car on site. You land, we pick you up, drop you at the villa, the car is delivered the next morning.
For the day of Eid itself, most families stay close to home. Morning prayer is often at the local musalla, walking distance.
Respectful etiquette, what to know
If you're second or third generation MRE, or traveling with non-Muslim friends, here are some markers.
The sacrifice is a religious act. It happens after morning prayer, in the presence of the head of the family. Children can watch or not, depending on the parents. If you're staying in a villa and planning the sacrifice on site, check with the owner and organise a clean space, ideally with water access.
If you'd rather not perform the sacrifice yourself, you can order an already-prepared lamb from a butcher. KingKech can organise this for you, delivered to the villa the evening before, ready to cook or already cut to your preferences.
During the three days, many shops close, especially in the medina. Get your groceries done on the 25th or 26th.
Traditional dress isn't mandatory, but many MRE families use the occasion to wear djellaba or kaftan on Eid day. The souks of Bab Doukkala and Sidi Ghanem stock for adults and children.
What you can do during Eid
The morning of the 27th is family and sacrifice. From Thursday the 28th afternoon, you can start moving again.
Agafay desert. 45 minutes from Marrakech. Luxury camp, dinner under a Berber tent, quad or camel ride, sunrise on the stones. Good for resetting the kids to another rhythm.
Ourika valley. One hour drive. Waterfalls, light hike, lunch at a Berber riverside restaurant. Classic outing that always works.
Hammam and spa. Royal Mansour, La Mamounia, or independent high-end spas in Hivernage. Two hours of treatments, that's what you need after the long meals.
Essaouira. Three hours each way, best done over two days. Atlantic wind, grilled fish at the port, Unesco medina. From May 29 it becomes a strong option.
Hot air balloon at dawn. 6am liftoff, flight over the palmeraie and the valley. For 4 to 8 people. Booking required at least 5 days ahead.
We organise the whole thing. Message us on WhatsApp with your preferences.
Traditional Eid meals
You're going to eat a lot. Here is what's coming.
Boulfaf opens the table from the morning of the 27th. Skewers of liver and lamb fat wrapped in caul, grilled on coal. Served with bread, salt, cumin, paprika. Rich, dense, delicious.
Mrouzia usually arrives on day two. Sweet-savory lamb tagine with honey, almonds, raisins, cinnamon, ras el hanout. Long to prepare, but the signature dish of Eid.
Offal tagine (douara) uses the parts that don't get grilled. Tomatoes, onions, spices, sometimes chickpeas. A sharing dish, eaten by hand with bread.
Méchoui comes out when there's a bread oven or earth oven. Whole lamb roasted for 5 to 6 hours. Reserved for big family gatherings.
If you want to go out on the 28th or 29th evening, several spots are open: Le Comptoir Darna in Hivernage, Nomad on the Spice Square, Al Fassia for traditional Fes cuisine, Le Salama for a view over Jemaa el-Fna.
